Shanghai’s citywide design programme, telling the story of Shanghai through the designers who live and work here. Through four curated design districts and over 100 design hotspots, it connects culture, design and lifestyle across the city, elevating Shanghai as a global design destination.
Design in the City is our citywide design programme. It takes design beyond the exhibition hall and into the streets and everyday life of Shanghai. We believe design truly comes alive when creativity flows into the city’s streets, cafés and riverbanks.
In 2026, Design in the City ran more than 100 activations across the city, including 100 design hotspots, over 20 public events and 15 open studio days, spanning installations, exhibitions, retail spaces, design studios and hospitality venues. The programme focused on four distinctive districts, each with its own theme: Changning, “Design for Tomorrow”; Huangpu, “Design Through Time”; Jing’an, “The Social Design Circuit”; and Xuhui, “Creative Convergence”. A series of films and city guides, led by local designers and shop owners, shares Shanghai through their eyes. Design in the City offers design lovers and city explorers a route into Shanghai’s design culture, and brings the city’s identity as a design capital vividly to life.
