Design China Beijing was the first time Design Shanghai expanded beyond Shanghai, and became a highlight of Beijing Design Week.
Following the success of Design Shanghai, the inaugural Design China Beijing took place at the National Agricultural Exhibition Centre from 20 to 25 September 2018, during Beijing Design Week. Built on Design Shanghai’s proven model, the show brought together Chinese and international design brands across 6,500 square metres. It also gave emerging Chinese designers a platform, bringing global design to China’s cultural capital. The show was organised into three halls: Contemporary, Classic and Collectible Design. Five specially curated installations were presented across the venue and Taikoo Li Sanlitun: Watermark Mountain by Naihan Li, One Night in Beijing by Frank Chou Design Studio, Virtual Landscape Teahouse by Jamy Yang, Cloud Bone by Junjie Zhang for Sozen, and Ten Altar by Black Drama. Each offered its own interpretation of “Beijing elements”, bridging tradition and the contemporary. A design forum held alongside the show brought designers, architects and industry leaders together to discuss the future of design. The first edition laid a strong foundation for the show, which doubled in size the following year with more than 200 exhibitors.
